The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation announced today that John A. O’Brien will succeed William Sherlock as President of Foxwoods Resort Casino.
O’Brien will replace Mr. Sherlock, who announced his retirement in March after nine years with Foxwoods, six of those years as its President and CEO. Mr. O’Brien is the current executive vice president and chief financial officer of Foxwoods, a post he has held for nine years.
The two will work together over the near term to ensure an orderly and successful transition.
O’Brien is currently a member of the board of directors the Foxwoods Development Company, the tribe’s off-reservation development entity. Prior to his role as CFO of Foxwoods, Mr. O’Brien spent 12 1/2 years with Hilton Hotels Corporation, where he held several key management positions, most recently vice president of international operations for Hilton Gaming Corporation. While also at Hilton, he was President and chief executive officer of its Windsor Ltd. Property in Ontario, Canada.
Tribal Chairman Michael J. Thomas stated: “First, our thanks to Bill for his long and dedicated service to the Tribal Community. We look forward to Bill’s next role supporting our many MPTN economic diversification efforts. John, as reflected in our unanimous Tribal Council action, has earned this opportunity to take us into an exciting future that includes a new casino next door to Foxwoods, and the completion of the destination Resort that our Tribal Community has been pursuing for more than two decades now.”
Vice Chairman Kenneth M. Reels added: “I was honored to oversee the executive search process. The Tribal Council is very pleased to have come to this unanimous decision on John’s appointment. This was the result of a national search, utilizing best practices with the assistance of HVS Executive Search firm.”
John O’Brien stated: “I am excited and honored to be selected as Bill’s successor and to continue to move Foxwoods forward for the benefit of our employees, our customers, and the Tribe. Following Bill will be a difficult task, as he did a fantastic job at Foxwoods. I look forward to working with Bill during this transitional period, and with the rest of the team to make Foxwoods the No. 1 property in Connecticut.”
William Sherlock concluded, “I am delighted that we selected John as my successor, with whom I have worked for nine years. I believe there is no better candidate to lead Foxwoods into the future.”
O’Brien, 49, is married and has two children. The family lives in Stonington, Conn.
